Rev. Maybelle Taylor Bennett

Pastor, Covenant Christian Community

Biography

Rev. Maybelle Taylor Bennett first became affiliated with Covenant Christian Community in 1979 and continued as an associate member through the next two and one-half decades. She embarked on a career in the ministry in search of a spiritual path informed by science, enriched in community, and effective in addressing the 21st-century challenges of daily life in 2007. At that time, she answered the call from the small meditative faith family of the Covenant Christian Community to facilitate a transformational conversation about the destiny of the church.

That intensely introspective conversation lasted five years, during which time Rev. Maybelle pursued seminary training at the Center for Inner Awareness. From there she was ordained in 2012 and was subsequently engaged by Covenant Christian Community to become its Pastor in April 2013.

Rev. Maybelle holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Vassar College in Africana Studies and a Master of Science in Urban Planning degree from Columbia University. She worked as a Town Planning Officer in Lagos Nigeria, served the District of Columbia for sixteen years as a Zoning Commissioner, and was Director of the Howard University Community Association until her retirement in 2019.

Rev. Maybelle is the mother of Rebeccah Bennett Kenyatta, founder of Emerging Wisdom, LLC in St. Louis, MO. She is the mother-in-love of Salim Kenyatta, and the grandmother of two granddaughters, Willow and Sage Kenyatta.
